By the end of the nineteenth century, men and women born in Oman were living on the banks of the Congo River and the Great Lakes of Central Africa. This talk explores the processes that drove the circulation of Omanis in the western Indian Ocean. While the Arab sultanate in Zanzibar and its Omani rulers often receive the most attention, the lives and movements of everyday Omanis, their families, and dependents to the Swahili coast and beyond help us see the complex web of debt and mobility that structured relations over a vast area.

Dr. Thomas McDow is a historian of the Indian Ocean and the author of Buying Time: Debt and Mobility in the Western Indian Ocean (Ohio University Press, 2018). His research focuses on the relationship between Oman, the east African coast, and the African interior in the nineteenth century. He is also interested in the history of medicine, public health, and disease. Dr. McDow earned his Ph.D. at Yale University. Dr. McDow is a 2015 Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center Research Fellow.
