Panel Discussion: Is FinTech the key to closing the gender gap?

Mon, Mar 6

FINCA's International Women's Day Event 2017

Financial technology ("FinTech") is revolutionizing the way low-income people in developing countries access financial resources and transact with each other and the world: from enabling mobile payments that reduce expensive trips to a bank branch, to digital savings accounts, to accessing credit, to paying for solar power in affordable daily installments. Women in particular, long disproportionately held back by poverty, have much to gain. Technology has the potential to unlock markets and enable previously "unbanked" groups to access services at an unprecedented scale and velocity.

Date
: Monday, March 6th  | 5:30 - 8:00pm (Panel and Free Networking Reception)

Venue: FINCA, 1201 15th Street, NW Washington, DC 20005, NAHB Auditorium

Structure: Panel discussion moderated by Andrée Simon, CEO of FINCA Microfinance Holding Company, followed by networking reception

Official Portraits of French and American Presidents - 1958-2017

Mar 24, 2017

A Conference by Ms. Vanessa Badré.

In recent years, the unveiling of the official portrait of the French president has become a major event in the French media.

Since the beginning of the fifth republic, in 1958, official portraits have drawn ever more public attention.

Once the image is chosen, it will be associated with the person of the president long after  the end of his mandate. Much as in the United States, this official photograph is exhibited in town halls, civic centers and government buildings.

Why do those portraits have so much to teach us about French constitution, democracy  and relationship to power ? How do they mirror the evolution of society?  What do we learn when we look at them alongside similar portraits of American presidents ?  How is legitimacy built out of images?  Which  historical tradition and iconographic heritage  inspired  the representation of the president?

A close look at a number of French and American portraits will offer up some answers.

Jain in DC
Sun, Apr 9

It takes just a few seconds of listening to Jain to know that you've stumbled on someone special. Pick a song - any song - from the Parisian's glorious, globe-trotting debut album, Zanaka, and the effect is the same. Instantly, you'll be startled, smitten and smiling.

It took about a minute for the audience at this year's French Grammys, Les Victoires de la Musique, to anoint Jain pop's most compelling new star.

Performing her song Come at the televised ceremony, surrounded by dancing doppelgangers, backed by masked drummers and blaring brass, Jain stole the show as the crowd leapt from their seats in disbelief. The following day, Come was at No.1, helping to propel Zanaka to platinum sales in France within a couple of months of its release.

When: Sun, Apr 9 at 8pm (doors open 7pm)

Where: Rock and Roll Hotel - 1353 H St, NE, Washington, DC 20002
