EXHIBITION | FACES 2.0 by CHRISTOPH PALASCHKE
March 1 - March 31, 2017

The ACFDC presents the Austrian artist Christoph Palaschke's first solo show in the US. The exhibit FACES 2.0 gives an indication of the work of the artist in the field of portrait painting in the last 15 years. With exhibits ranging from abstraction of the spatula technique and photorealist portraits in coal and acrylic, abstract and reduced portraits to shadow portraits from his latest series Face to Face the show represents a well-balanced overview of the artist's oeuvre.

LITERATURE FESTIVAL | ZEITGEIST DC
March 6, 2017 | 6:00 pm


The Zeitgeist DC literature festival makes the richness of German-language literature accessible to English speakers by presenting the latest works of the literary scenes of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. This year's theme, Queer as Volk, will highlight new works in German that deal with themes of queerness and identity. Among the authors is Fabian Hischmann from Germany with his debut novel Am Ende schmeißen wir mit Gold (In the end we throw with gold) and Zora del Buono from Switzerland with her novel Gotthard. The writer and journalist Jürgen Bauer wrote Austria's contribution Das Fenster zur Welt (The Window to the World) to the literature festival.

THEATRE | ILLEGAL HELPERS
March 8, 2017 | 7:30 pm


Come witness an emotionally powerful documentary play by prize-winning playwright, Maxi Obexer. It examines the plight of the Illegal Helpers who provide aid and shelter to migrants flooding Europe, even though assisting them is against the law. This play sheds a powerful light, and provides keen insight - on the contemporary tragedy that threatens to engulf Western Europe. Illegal Helpers takes a sharp, poignant look at those who help and those who callously sit by doing nothing.

FILM SCREENING | ONE OF US
March 15, 2017 | 7:30 pm


One of Us tells the story of Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter (1907-1943), who as a conscientious objector refused to serve in the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II and was sentenced to death and executed in 1943. The film deals with new findings on Jägerstätter, including the court room protocol and numerous original letters and notes. One of Us also builds a bridge into present day and discusses the significance of Jägerstätter for today’s generation. The screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with the author of the documentary Peter Schierl and its director Lothar Riedl.

THEATRE | CURIE_MEITNER_LAMARR_INDIVISIBLE

Three outstanding pioneers represent the achievements of women in the fields of science and technology: The double Nobel Price winner and discoverer of radioactivity Marie Curie (1867-1934), the Austrian-Swedish nuclear physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968) and the Viennese Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000) with the invention of frequency hopping. Their stories are in the centre of the theatre play Curie_Meitner_Lamarr_indivisible, produced by the Viennese association portraittheaterThe theatre performancedirected by Sandra Schüddekopf, with Anita Zieher impersonating the three women was a great success in Austria and had already been invited to Belgium, Germany, Iran, Poland, Switzerland and Romania.

The Environmental Film Festival is the world’s premier showcase of environmentally themed films which seeks to advance public understanding of the environment through the power of film. This year the festival celebrates its 25th anniversary.

CONCERT | DEANDRE SIMMONS: DIE WINTERREISE

Operatic bass vocalist DeAndre Simmons performs Franz Schubert's epic song cycle Die Winterreise with pianist Robert Cassidy at the Castleton Festival. Mr. Simmons has already performed successfully with several companies and symphony orchestras including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Columbia Pro Cantare, Curtis Opera Theatre, Collegiate Chorale of New York, Opera Panama, Bohème Opera of New Jersey, The Kansas City Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, and the Castleton Festival under Maestro Lorin Maazel.
