2016 Haiku Contest: Travel

Deadline: November 14, 2016 | Monday at 9AM

The Japan Information & Culture Center (JICC) and the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASW) invite you to participate in our 2016 Haiku Contest under the theme of "travel".

The most famous haiku in the world is Matsuo Basho's poetic travel account, Narrow Road to the Deep North. In it, Basho captured the joy of travel by suffusing his sedate, at times sardonic account of his journeys with enchanting haiku on the places that captivated his imagination. Travel is to haiku what heists are to movies: it is where the form originated, and it shaped the form, so it is often revisited.

Submit a travel themed haiku to be judged by an expert panel. Detailed prize information available below!

Rules

Theme: Submissions should be travel themed.

Language: Please submit your haiku in English.

Deadline: November 14, 2016 at 9:00 AM EST. Entries received after that time will not be accepted.

Eligibility: The contest is open to the public.

Regulations: Modern and traditional haiku are eligible. Each participation can submit up to three (3) poems. However, we ask that the haiku be original and not submitted to another contest/previously published. Publication is defined as an appearance in a printed book, magazine, or journal (sold or given away), or in any online journal that presents edited periodic content. The appearance of poems in online discussion lists or personal websites is not considered publication. Judges will be asked to disqualify any haiku that they have seen before.

Submissions: Submit your haiku electronically to the email address jicc-haiku@ws.mofa.go.jp. Up to three (3) poems may be submitted. Separate emails for each submission are not required. In the submission email, please include the following information:

Haiku not submitted to the above email address will not be accepted. Failure to follow this format may result in disqualification without notice.
