Alice Diop, a documentary filmmaker

The Cultural services of the French Embassy presents Alice Diop, a documentary filmmaker, a special screening dedicated to the young French Director and screenwriter, featuring two of her documentaries.

Before being a movie director, Alice Diop studied History and visual sociology: exploring relationships between society and cinema has always been fundamental in her work.

Danton's Death
The film shows both the courageous journey and the doubts of Steve Tientcheu, a 25 years old man living in the “periphery” while following acting classes in the prestigious “Cours Simon” in Paris.

Towards Tenderness
The 2015 short documentary is an intimate exploration of a masculine territory in a French suburb. Alice Diop reveals the testimony of four young men about love and the difficulty to become a man today.

Live and Life Will Give You Pictures: Masterworks of French Photography, 1890 – 1950

The Cultural services of the French Embassy is pleased to announce the exhibition Live and Life Will Give You Pictures: Masterworks of French Photography, 1890 – 1950.

This first-ever photography exhibition at the Barnes Foundation includes over 170 photographs reflecting the spirit of France and especially Paris, at this period of profound transformation in the late 19th- to mid-20th century.

The work by masters such as Berenice Abbott, Eugène Atget, Ilse Bing, Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edgar Degas, André Kertész, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Dora Maar, and Man Ray, are presented as part of the exhibition and resonate with the core of the institution, which holds an important collection of Post-Impressionist and early modern paintings.

Young Concert Artists presents: Rémi Geniet

The 38th Young Concert Artists Series presents, with the support of the Cultural services of the French Embassy, French pianist Rémi Geniet for his Washington, DC debut.

He is the youngest prize-winner of the Bonn International Beethoven Competition and was awarded the second prize at the Queen Elisabeth 2013 International Piano Competition at the age of twenty

His debut all-Bach CD, released in February 2015, has been praised by critics and was awarded the prestigious Diapason D’Or.
