The Embassy of the Czech Republic will present director Andrea Culková's powerful personal documentary Sugar Blues on October 19, at 6 pm.

Can sugar be a drug? Culková thinks so. She became aware of her sugar addiction during her pregnancy, when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Looking for food on store shelves that does not contain refined sugar became the driving force for the creation of her documentary. For five years, the director charted the expansion of the sugar industry and alternative ways of eating. She uncovered an incredible connection between diseases, behavioral disorders and excessive consumption of sugar. To what extent is the sweet life the engine of our civilization? (Dir. Andrea Culková, 2014, 79 min., primarily in English with some Czech subtitled into English)

The film is part of the Mutual Inspirations Festival 2016 - Martina Navrátilová, honoring a woman who was at the top of her game in tennis as well as a strong advocate for healthy living.
