The Japan Information & Culture Center welcomes the return of the New York Japan CineFest, presenting seven short films highlighting the most exciting new voices in cinema! 

Founded by Yasu Suzuki, Kosuke Furukawa, and Hiroshi Kono in 2011, the New York Japan CineFest (NYJCF) began as a small, one-night event in New York City. Now in its sixth year, it has grown into an international, multi-city program connecting up-and-coming independent Japanese and Japanese-American filmmakers with a forum for expressing their unique perspective to the world. 

Join us on September 29th for seven award-winning short films followed by a very special discussion and Q&A with award-winning film directors Karen Kasmauski and Kathryn Tolbert. For a full list of films and descriptions, please visit our website or the event registration page below.

DIRECTOR KAREN KASMAUSKI

Karen Kasmauski is a filmmaker, photographer, project manager, and educator. Since 1984 she has produced 25 major stories as Photographer for National Geographic on topics including human migration, viruses, aging, and genetics. Her award-winning book,NURSE: A World of Care was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and includes an introduction from former President Jimmy Carter.
 
Her work on the 2015 award-winning documentary film Fall Seven Times, Get Up Eight: The Japanese War Brides, features the struggles of her mother as a young Japanese War Bride. 
 
 
DIRECTOR KATHRYN TOLBERT
 
Kathryn Tolbert is a seasoned journalist who has worked for The Associated Press, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post as a reporter and editor. She was recently selected as Deputy Editor of Washington Post's new and innovative approach to journalism, The Talent Network.

When she worked for The Associated Press in Tokyo, and later for The Washington Post's Tokyo Bureau, she often wrote about the experiences of Japanese women. Her contributions to the film Fall Seven Times, Get Up Eight: The Japanese War Brides is an emotional exploration of her mother as a Japanese War Bride.

Program begins at 6:30 pm. No admittance after 7:00 pm or once seating is full.
