POP of Kolor: Kwang Nyun Song & Kyungjoo Park

Join us for the opening of POP of Kolor, a new K-Arts exhibition featuring an electrifying mashup of American pop art with Korean culture and tradition by artists Kwang Nyun Song and Kyungjoo Park! The opening includes a reception and in-person introductory talk by the artists.

Song and Park reenvision an iconic American art style with unique Korean techniques and motifs to create an irresistible twist on this signature genre. Park's series entitled The Fantastic Play expresses the whimsical complexity of human beings through artistic play. It captures the beautiful side that people want to reveal, as well as the immature, superficial nature hidden in our hearts. She employs a variety of artistic media from sculpture to visual art.

In a contrasting but complimentary style, Song inserts peony blossoms or butterflies - central motifs in Korean traditional folk paintings - using Korean embroidery techniques onto images of modern civilization and austere portraits of symbolic figures. This unbalanced combination produces a uniquely pleasing aesthetic, and she creates fresh forms by blending East and West, tradition and modernity.
