Chantal Akerman: A Traveler’s Tale

The National Gallery of Art presents Chantal Akerman: A Traveler’s Tale with the support of the Cultural services of the French Embassy.

By presenting this special program dedicated to Brussels-born filmmaker Chantal Akerman (1950–2015), the National Gallery of Art highlights a visionary artist, who referred to herself as a nomad, a wanderer who never remained, physically or mentally, in one spot.

In an oeuvre that encompasses travelogues, documentaries, literary adaptations, musicals, and at least one landmark of film history, Chantal Akerman explored alienation, female subjectivity, landscapes both physical and psychological, and her own identity. Her influence on feminist filmmaking and avant-garde cinema has been substantial as she offered a new way of experiencing the world.
