New Nordic Cinema - Raspberry Boat Refugee

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Directed by Leif Lindblom (Finland/Sweden, 2014). This playful comedy of errors draws upon Scandinavian stereotypes to tell the story of a man who is sure that he is a Swedish man trapped in the body of a Finn. Ever since a childhood holiday in Sweden, Mikko (Jonas Karlsson) has wanted to trade the oppressive Finnish silence and flow of vodka for a Swedish life: raspberry boat candies, fridge-cold buttermilk, and Abba.

However, his passion for all things Swedish doesn’t sit well with other Finns, particularly with his father. When he meets a suicidal Swedish psychologist he seizes an opportunity for an identity switch, but in doing so, he becomes saddled with many unexpected consequences.

94 min. | In Finnish and Swedish with English subtitles

The music world was rocked in 2010 when Alex Ross of The New Yorker said the Minnesota Orchestra sounded like “the greatest orchestra in the world” in a Carnegie Hall performance of Sibelius’ Kullervo.

Hear this concert—and you’ll be wowed just like Ross and so many others. Kullervois the darkly beautiful early work of Sibelius, and to help tell the tale of this tragic Finnish character, the Orchestra is joined by all-star vocalists including one of the world’s finest men’s choirs. Performance will feature English translations projected above the stage.

The year 2015 marks the 150th birthday of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. With our own special connection to Sibelius, we’re thrilled to participate in the Sibelius 150 international jubilee. Join us for select Sibelius concerts to commemorate Finland’s most prestigious composer. Click here for more information.
