The Season Bids Us

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, in partnership with Folger Consort, present the music series The Season Bids Us at the Lutheran Church Of The Reformation.

Combining Italian violonist Giovanni Antonio Guido's The Four Seasons with Christmas music for soprano and strings by French Baroque composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier, the concert series explores Baroque music in France during the early 18th century, celebrating the holiday season.

Born in Genoa in 1675, Giovanni Antonio Guido worked at the service of the Duke of Orléans and eventually gained the attention of King Louis the XIV. It is in Versailles, during the fisrt decades of the 18th century that he composed and published his Scherzi Armonici sopra le Quattro Stagioni dell’Anno (The Four Seasons) which, like Antonio Vivaldi's piece of the same name, feature poems for each season.

Marc Antoine Charpentier, contemporary with Giovanni Antonio Guido and greatly interested in Italian music and culture, was part of a transitory period in music styles definition when Italian and French pieces mutually enriched one another.

The concerts will be performed by a string ensemble featuring French violinist Julien Chauvin, and soprano Rosa Lamoreaux
