The Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) and the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASW) invite you to participate in our Autumn 2015 Haiku Contest!

Submit an autumn themed haiku to be judged by an expert panel. 

Prizes include guaranteed spots at JASW and JICC programs, guided tours of special facilities, cultural items, and more!

Theme: Submissions should be autumn themed. For more information about seasonal themes, please visit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigo

Deadline: November 21, 2015 at 11:59pm EST. Entries received after this time will not be accepted.

Eligibility: The contest is open to the public.

Regulations: Modern and traditional haiku are eligible. Each participant can submit up to three (3) poems. However, we ask that the haiku be original and not submitted to another contest or previously published. Publication is defined as an appearance in a printed book, magazine, or journal (sold or given away), or in any online medium that presents edited periodic content. The appearance of poems in online discussion lists or personal websites is not considered publication. Judges will be asked to disqualify any haiku that they have seen before.

Submissions: Please submit your haiku electronically to jicc-haiku@ws.mofa.go.jp . Up to three (3) poems may be submitted. Separate emails for each submission are not required. In the submission email, please include the following information:

  • Author's name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Statement of rights (see below)


Haiku not submitted to the above email address will not be accepted. Failure to follow this format may result in disqualification without notice.

Awards: Guaranteed spots at JASW and JICC programs, guided tours of special facilities, cultural items, and other prizes. Detailed prizes will be announced at a later date.

Rights: We request (but do not require) the right to publicize winning poems on Embassy of Japan social media. Please note whether or not you agree to this request upon submission. All rights revert to the authors after publication and all poems may be submitted to other publications after the contest period.
