Bistro Bohem, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic, will screen the film Empties(Vratné lahve) on March 17, at 7 pm, as part of the Film and Beer Series. Winning the Czech Lion for Best Direction, the film centers on a teacher exhausted from instructing his obnoxious students; therefore, he quits his job. In pursuit of finding a slice of happiness again, he dabbles in other ventures and even does a little matchmaking. The witty, humorous film explores the joys of life.

About the Film:
Josef Tkaloun (Zdeněk Svěrák) has lost his love for teaching, dealing with disrespectful students on an every day basis. After a student talks back, he decides he has had enough and leaves the teaching profession. However, he knows that he can't remain home all day listening to his wife Eliška give him tasks. Therefore, he sets out to pursue other "occupations," including mail courier and bottle collector, jobs that make his wife question his sensibilities at the age of 65. While he tries to find himself, his wife Eliška craves the love that they once shared.  Meanwhile, their daughter Helenka (Tatiana Vilhelmová) struggles to find meaning after her husband leaves her for another woman. Renowned actor Pavel Landovský makes an appearance as Řezác, a bottle collector dubbed "Mr. Chatterbox" specifically for how untalkative he is. Like the bottles being collected, each are empty and in search of meaning, companionship, and love. (Directed by Jan Svěrák, 2007, 104 min., Czech with English subtitles)
