20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope

Based on the award-winning manga by Naoki Urasawa, 20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope is the highly-anticipated sequel in the live-action, sci-fi adventure trilogy.

The first film, shown at the JICC in the spring of 2010, introduced us to Kenji and his childhood friends, all grown up and bored with life. As kids they fantasized about fighting a gang of villains out to conquer the world, writing about their imaginary escapades in the 'Book of Prophecies'. Decades later, when a dangerous cult and its mysterious masked leader, Friend, rise to power after a string of catastrophic events, Kenji and his friends realize that their playtime prophecies are coming true.

The Last Hope picks up in the year 2015. Around the world Friend is regarded as a savior, but Kenji's niece, Kanna, continues the struggle against him. When one of Kenji's old allies breaks out of prison to search for her, he discovers that her life is in grave danger. As if things couldn't get any worse, a new Book of Prophecy is found-and the forecast calls for chaos.

Japanese with English subtitles. Unrated. 139 min, 2009. Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi.
