THE BETROTHED

A theatrical performance based on the novel by Alessando Manzoni This theatrical performance is part of the celebrations to mark 150 years since the unification of Italy.

This play combines the words of The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) with music by some of the leading contemporary composers, as a representation of a world rich of virtues, vices and contradictions that can still move us.

The Betrothed was written by Alessandro Manzoni, perhaps the best-known Italian writer of post-unification Italy.

Introductory readings by David Gibbons

Choreography: Gilda Gelati, prima ballerina of La Scala Theatre Ballet Company, Milan

Music: Giuseppe Verdi, Pietro Mascagni, Vincenzo Bellini and Niccolò Paganini, performed by Elsa Martignoni, violinist (Giuseppe Verdi Orchestra, Milan)
